Charles “Charlie or Chuck” Amaral entered peacefully into rest, surrounded by his family, on February 24, 2018 in the home he built in San Leandro. He was 85 years old.
Chuck was born in Lihue, Kauai, Hawaii on June 13, 1932 to Leonora and John E. Amaral. He attended Kauai High School and then went on to achieve a vocational AA degree in construction. Chuck worked all his life as a carpenter, contractor and construction supervisor. In addition to his contributions in the construction of countless homes, apartment buildings, churches and office buildings, he also single-handedly designed and built 10 homes in the hills around his home, which stand in legacy of his skill and ingenuity. When Chuck was not busy working or raising his six children, he enjoyed raising canaries, playing guitar, growing vegetables and fruit, baking bread, making malasadas and cream puffs for his family and restoring and driving his vintage cars. He especially cherished the friendships formed in the Acorn A’s Model A Club and the trips he took with his wife Dahlia in his beautifully restored Model A.
Chuck is survived by his beloved wife of more than 60 years, Dahlia; their children, Diane Amaral Morrison, Cindy Amaral Aranda, Dorothy Amaral Santana, Leonard Amaral and Edward Amaral; their grandchildren, Christy Rodrigues, Nicholas Morrison, Anthony Aranda, Courtney Morrison, Julie Aranda, Cameron Santana and Kyle Santana; siblings, Robert “Bob” Amaral and Eleanor Kennedy and many loving extended family and cherished friends.
He was predeceased by his parents Leonora Amaral Schies and John E. Amaral; his siblings, Gilbert Amaral and Dorothy Carvalho and his son Charles Jr. “Chuckie” Amaral.
